How to recognise a licensed UIMLA IML

A licensed UIMLA International Mountain Leader will have a UIMLA carnet (credit card format) which looks as follows.

The most important feature is the holographic annual sticker, which should mention the current year. The logo left to the annual sticker may show the logo of the local UIMLA member association. If the logo of the local UIMLA member association is rectangular, it may be shown as a watermark behind the name and date of birth of the UIMLA IML.

The QR code may link to the UIMLA website, or to the website of the local UIMLA member, or to a page with more information on the UIMLA IML.

This is the only valid carnet for an UIMLA IML. When an UIMLA IML has this carnet and a current annual sticker, you can be sure that the IML
– was trained according to the UIMLA Standard and successfully completed the exam(s)
– fulfils the UIMLA requirements regarding CPD – Continuing Professional Development*
– has a valid First Aid certificate*
– has an adequate liability insurance*
*this is verified yearly by the local UIMLA member association before issuing the new annual sticker; this proces is audited periodically during UIMLA Compliance Audits

When working, an UIMLA IML is obliged to display the UIMLA medal and/or UIMLA badge (logo):

UIMLA IML’s can buy medals and badges in various versions from their association.

Title

The official title to be used by an UIMLA IML should be ‘International Mountain Leader’ or the equivalent in the local language as specified in Annex 1 of the UIMLA Logo Policy. The terms ‘guide’ or ‘guiding’ are commonly used to describe our activity and they may be used where it is normal to do so. However an IML may not use the term ‘mountain guide’ as a title.
